Project” Science Technology and Innovation Hub in fringe village of Khangchendzonga National Park (KNP) UNESCO World Heritage Site, Yuksam and Tashiding Block, West District, Sikkim State” Launched in Yuksam to Boost Rural Livelihoods and Eco-Tourism

A Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Hub was inaugurated at Yuksam, West Sikkim, to strengthen rural livelihoods through sustainable agriculture, eco-tourism, and traditional knowledge systems. The initiative is funded by the Department of Science and Technology – SEED Division (DST-SEED), Government of India, and jointly implemented by the Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee (KCC) and Sikkim University.
The launch event was held at the KCC Office, with Shri D.S. Limboo, Zilla Adhyaksha, Geyzing, as Chief Guest. Guests of Honour included Shri Chandhan Singh Limboo, SDM Yuksam, and Shri S.M. Limboo, BDO Yuksam. The program saw participation from university experts, government officials, Panchayats, SHGs, FPOs, and community members from Yuksam and Gerethang. MLA Tshering T. Bhutia shared his support via a video message.
The STI Hub aims to:
Improve agro-horticulture practices through technology support and training.
Promote value addition of forest produce like honey, mushrooms, and bamboo crafts
Link agriculture and homestays to boost eco-tourism-based livelihoods
The project will set up greenhouses, a community facility centre, and offer training in composting, fruit and vegetable processing, mushroom cultivation, and beekeeping. It also seeks to revive indigenous farming and craft traditions while creating market linkages with regional and tourism networks.
Officials noted that the project aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and contributes to several UN Sustainable Development Goals.
