Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee(K.C.C) Sikkim
Yuksam,West Sikkim
Introduction
Handmade Paper is the manual process of paper making typically carried out by an individual or two. Handmade paper is a single layer of fibers that have been entwined. These are held together by cellulose fibers through natural bonding.
In recent years, handmade paper making unit in small scale has been setup at Yuksam GPK under co funding project of Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee(K.C.C), Yuksam GPK and UNDP SECURE HIMALAYA PROJECT . There have been tremendous efforts made by the K.C.C and Yuksam Panchayat to uplift the “paper unit” at Yuksam through various training, adding machineries, covering the cost incurred by the unit and more. Though the unit is producing paper in small quantities, it is not being able to meet up with the demand and the quality required.
So, with the initiative of Khangchendzonga Conservation Committee (K.C.C) Sikkim and Yuksam GPK, a team along with the President(K.C.C) were send for training at Rajasthan, Jaipur where Kumarappa National Handmade Paper Institute is located, a place where a finest quality of handmade paper are produced, prepared and sold.
For better understanding of handmade paper making, to learn about the proper techniques, to learn about the quality handmade paper making, a team of nine members along with the president of Khangchendzonga conservation committee attended a five days training at Kumarappa National Handmade Paper Institute at Rajasthan, Jaipur from 4th September to 8th September which was coordinated by DR. Outcome of the training
With the right opportunity that was placed before the trainee, we had a great experience to learn more about handmade paper making, which can be further applied in our own Yuksam GPK paper unit. Talking about the outcomes, we saw how a handmade paper can be a business product, how it can generate employment in the society, how a waste can be turned into beautiful products with and the establishment of small to large scale industry.
Most importantly we learned about the quality handmade paper making through Theory but more on practical classes as we got chance to physically use the machinery and make papers from the raw materials like elephant dung, cow dung, dephne, waste cloth (cotton racks) Banana fibe, Agriculture waste fibers wheat straw, Rice straw,Banana stems, and waste paper which will be helpful in making handmade papers in our “Paper Unit”.
Along with that we learned about the chemical additives, biotechnological process, pulping, beating, bath ratio, duration of boiling raw materials, marketing of handmade paper, pulping process, sheet making, pressing ,drying, raw materials and its source
So, with all these learning, efforts and practice we will be able to make a quality paper at our Paper Unit(Yuksam GPK) and the outcome of the training will be the quality, eco-friendly handmade paper produce by the trainee at Yuksam Paper Unit.
Conclusion
It was a great experience to learn and bring back the learnings from the land of Rajasthan, Jaipur which is famous for its ancient history and also for textile printing and handmade paper making.
A place where we learned about the proper handmade paper making, experienced the beauty of handmade paper making, its creativity and uniqueness.
We were glad that we will be applying and bringing these methods, techniques, to our own paper unit which is at Yuksam, West Sikkim ,bio chemicals additives and few newer machineries for further development of paper unit.
