ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON THE “SUSTAINABLE TOURISM” FOR WEST SIKKIM TOWARDS A GREEN RECOVERY ORGANISED BY KCC, SUPPORTED BY GREEN RECOVERY PROGRAMME OF UNDP INDIA AT ZILLA PANCHAYAT BHAWAN, GEYZING,WEST SIKKIM
27th April, 2022- One day workshop was held at Zilla Panchayat Bhawan in Geyzing, West Sikkim. The workshop was chaired by Geyzing Senior Superintendent of Police Hari Chettri. The others present were from different departments, organizations, community representatives, stake holders. They were SDM (HQ)-Gopal Chettri, SDM Yuksam-Tshering T. Bhutia, Additional Director- Animal Husbandry, Additional Director-Tourism Department, DFO and other representatives from the Forest Department, Khangchendzonga National Park Officials, Tourism Officials, UNDP-India, KCC team,Rural Tourism representatives and local tourism stake holders from West Sikkim. Thisworkshop was first of its kind to be held where stake holders were called and present for 10th participation and inputs as well as valuable suggestions and views to make the tourism sustainable for many generations to come.Purpose of the workshop-The ongoing pandemic and loss of greenery due to the mismanaged and shortcomings in the tourism policies has put the sustainability in trouble for the days ahead. This calls for a proper management in the tourism sector of the state and the tourism policies that supports the sustainability as well as the nature and the culture of the regional people, which resulted in this workshop to make everyone aware of the past as well as the present scenario of the tourism in West Sikkim to come together to make the tourism business grow keeping in mind the long terms benefits as well as to keep in check the ecology in balance that is to improve and conserve the greenery of the region. The reason for the participation for all aspects of life was to get the cooperation to work together
for a fruitful result in sustainable tourism towards a green recovery. The existing tourism policy has many issues and shortcomings that needs for review and draft a new one that is based on the
sustainable tourism and nature of the State that benefits all.
